Highly Skilled Positions Going Unfilled Across America

Do incentives encouraging relocation leave something to be desired?

One facet of modern America society typically cited as a contributing factor to our robust economy is a mobile workforce. Yet has this quality possibly reached a limit in the current downturn?

Apparently the challenge Carlisle Companies is having hiring employees with the skills the company needs is not uncommon. Search "unfilled jobs" and you will find several recent articles highlighting this problem across a wide range of industries. Yet, somehow unemployment remains stubbornly high.

One wonders if some larger part of the matter centers on demographics (older men have been disproportionately affected by the economy's contraction). Although salaries for unfilled positions are said to be attractive, maybe not attractive enough to those out of work. After all, moving one's self — let alone one's family — to locales where suitable work is available is no trivial affair.

Companies having trouble finding workers with the skills they need probably will have to bite the bullet and pay up. Either that, or risk their operation's failure (something shareholders ought take into account).
